Scrap Metal Preparation Starts with Composition and Geometry

“Metal scrap” is not a complete feed specification: alloy, section size, attachments, contamination and concealed hazards change the processing route.

A scrap-processing review should separate ferrous and non-ferrous fractions, describe the physical form and identify prohibited or hazardous items. The required output—reduced length, compacted package or another form—must connect to downstream handling. Machinery selection follows that evidence and a controlled site review.

In This Analysis

Describe the scrap beyond its broad name

Record alloy or material group where known, typical and maximum section size, wall thickness, length, shape and attachments. Include representative photographs and samples. A stream of light sheet offcuts presents a different preparation problem from mixed structural pieces or bulky assemblies.

Identify exclusions and hazards before feeding

Closed containers, pressurised components, batteries, liquids, gas cylinders and unknown objects require a defined inspection and segregation route. The public equipment page cannot determine whether a specific item is safe to process. Site rules, competent assessment and the approved operating documentation control acceptance.

Define the output and movement plan

Clarify why the material is being cut or compacted and how the processed form will be lifted, stored, loaded and accepted downstream. The machine, feed system, guarding, foundations, utilities and handling equipment must then be reviewed as one process rather than isolated purchases.

Create an inventory of recurring and exceptional scrap

Separate regular production offcuts from demolition loads, purchased mixed scrap and rare oversized pieces. For each group, record source, material identity where known, typical and maximum geometry, surface condition, attachments and current handling method. Photograph representative loads beside a scale reference and identify how the stream changes. Exceptional items should not be averaged away: a closed section, long flexible piece or dense assembly may control the safe feed and machine interface even if it appears infrequently. The inventory becomes a controlled feed description and a basis for deciding which objects require preparation, another process or exclusion.

The inventory should be reviewed with the people who buy, receive, sort, load and sell the scrap. Each role sees a different part of the feed boundary and may know about attachments, liquids or exceptional pieces that are absent from the nominal grade. Record disagreements and resolve them through inspection or evidence rather than averaging the descriptions. If a supplier or production process changes, compare the new stream with the controlled inventory before continuing under the old acceptance. This keeps the machinery discussion linked to material that is actually present.

Build an inspection, quarantine and rejection route

Define where incoming scrap is inspected, what the operator can verify and which findings require a competent specialist. Provide a marked area for closed containers, batteries, cylinders, liquids, unknown assemblies and other suspect items so they are not left beside accepted feed. The rejection route should name the responsible person and authorised next destination. Where loads are supplied by others, communicate exclusions and record recurring non-conformance. No camera view or final visual check can expose every concealed hazard; procurement controls, supplier information and safe opening or decontamination procedures may be necessary before mechanical processing is considered.

Validate the complete processing and handling sequence

Review loading equipment, operator visibility, feed restraint, machine cycle, processed-material removal and the response to an interruption as one sequence. Confirm that the proposed output can be lifted, stored and loaded without forcing people into unsafe positions or mixing material grades. Foundations, noise management, drainage, fire controls and maintenance access may become site interfaces depending on the selected configuration. A trial can test representative material behaviour, but the conditions and acceptance criteria must be recorded. The approved technical offer should define the agreed feed envelope, exclusions, supplied scope and verification boundary rather than relying on a broad description such as metal press.
