Material Application Guide

Metal Scrap Processing

Build the recovery route around verified metal identity, hazardous attachments and the receiver specification. A broad scrap label does not establish a safe preparation method or an acceptable output.

Define the Scrap Stream

Build the Process Basis Before Equipment Review

Sheet offcuts, turnings, profiles, cast components and dismantled assemblies behave differently during storage, transfer and size reduction. Record the source, metal type and grade, dimensions, coatings, attached materials and condition of each stream instead of treating all metallic material as equivalent.

The receiver controls the grade, cleanliness, sizing and documentation basis. Keep hazardous residues, closed vessels, batteries, pressurised items and unidentified components outside the normal processing stream until they have been assessed and routed under the site procedure.

Incoming Metal Streams

Separate Scrap by Composition and Hazard Profile

The stream definition should follow the material actually received and the quality basis agreed with the next operator.

M-01

Ferrous Production Scrap

Sheet, profiles, stampings and turnings can differ in alloy, geometry, surface treatment and residual cutting fluid.

  • Record Grade Or Alloy Basis
  • Identify Oil And Surface Coatings
M-02

Non-Ferrous Metal Scrap

Aluminium, copper-bearing and other non-ferrous fractions require controlled identity and separation to protect downstream quality.

  • Prevent Cross-Mixing
  • Record Insulation And Attachments
M-03

Assemblies and Contaminated Scrap

Fabricated items can retain plastics, fluids, batteries, pressure, sealed spaces or other components that change the treatment route.

Preparation Sequence

Remove Uncertainty Before Size Reduction

Preparation should establish material identity, remove prohibited hazards and preserve the segregation required by the receiver.

  1. 01

    Inspect and Quarantine

Check each load against the acceptance rule and isolate unknown, leaking, hot, closed or pressurised items.

  2. 02

    Depollute and Dismantle

Remove fluids, batteries, refrigerants and hazardous attachments through the authorised site route before normal processing.

  3. 03

    Segregate and Characterise

Keep metal types, alloy grades and coated fractions separate where mixing would change quality or risk.

  4. 04

    Confirm Output Rules

Agree composition, sizing, cleanliness, identification, storage and transport requirements with the receiver.

Equipment Review

Match the Process Category to a Defined Duty

Metal type alone does not select equipment. Feed geometry, hazardous exclusions, required output, handling method and site controls determine which architecture merits project review.

Controlled Shearing and Compaction

A scrap-processing arrangement may be reviewed for a characterised stream with a documented loading and discharge route.

  • Verified Feed Envelope
  • Defined Hazard Exclusions
  • Planned Output Handling
Review Scrap Processing Machinery

Defined Shredding and Separation

An industrial shredding route may be reviewed where liberation, particle form and downstream separation duties are explicitly defined.

  • Known Material Composition
  • Controlled Foreign Objects
  • Specified Downstream Fractions
Review Industrial Shredders

Suitability, accepted feed, output properties and process performance require project- and model-specific confirmation.

Recovered Metal Output

Define the Dispatch Form with the Receiver

Recovered metal may leave the site loose, sorted, cut, compacted or otherwise prepared under a receiver specification. The correct form depends on composition, contamination, handling, storage, transport and the next treatment step.

Keep inspection and processing records linked to the exact consignment. Visual appearance alone does not establish alloy identity, freedom from hazardous properties or compliance with an end-of-waste rule.

Site Interfaces

Connect Reception, Processing and Dispatch

The site layout should preserve segregation, contain residues and keep people clear of material movement and processing hazards.

01

Reception and Quarantine

Provide inspection, identification and isolated holding areas for suspect or prohibited material.

02

Material Handling

Coordinate cranes, loaders, forklifts and conveyors with defined travel paths and exclusion zones.

03

Residue and Housekeeping

Contain oils, fines, coatings and removed components and route them under the applicable waste procedure.

04

Output Dispatch

Reserve controlled areas for weighing, identification, storage and loading of each prepared fraction.

Safety Boundary

Treat Hidden Energy and Hazardous Content as Process Inputs

The installed work system requires its own material acceptance controls, risk assessment, safeguarding and operating instructions.

  • Reject Unverified Closed Or Pressurised Items
  • Isolate Batteries And Hazardous Attachments
  • Assess Radiation And Chemical Hazards
  • Control Cutting, Crushing And Ejected Material
  • Separate People From Mobile Equipment

Application Questions

Metal Scrap Processing FAQs

Can all ferrous scrap be processed as one stream?

Do not assume that magnetic response establishes one acceptable grade. Alloy, coating, attachments, contamination, dimensions and the receiver specification can require separate handling.

Why must closed or pressurised items be isolated?

A sealed or insufficiently opened item can retain pressure, fluid or unknown contents and can create severe hazards during cutting, crushing, heating or downstream metal production.

When is shredding relevant?

Shredding can only be reviewed against a defined liberation or sizing duty, known hazardous exclusions, foreign-object controls and a planned separation route for the resulting fractions.

What should a metal-processing enquiry include?

Provide metal types and grades, source, dimensions, attachments, contamination, hazardous exclusions, arrival pattern, handling method, receiver rules, output route, utilities and available layout.
